(1)H NMR and UV-visible data fusion for determining Sudan dyes in culinary spices.

Talanta. 2011 May 15; 84(3): 829-33
Di Anibal CV, Callao MP, Ruisánchez I

Two data fusion strategies (variable and decision level) combined with a multivariate classification approach (Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis, PLS-DA) have been applied to get benefits from the synergistic effect of the information obtained from two spectroscopic techniques: UV-visible and (1)H NMR. Variable level data fusion consists of merging the spectra obtained from each spectroscopic technique in what is called “meta-spectrum” and then applying the classification technique. Decision level data fusion combines the results of individually applying the classification technique in each spectroscopic technique. Among the possible ways of combinations, we have used the fuzzy aggregation connective operators. This procedure has been applied to determine banned dyes (Sudan III and IV) in culinary spices. The results show that data fusion is an effective strategy since the classification results are better than the individual ones: between 80 and 100% for the individual techniques and between 97 and 100% with the two fusion strategies.

Open Question: Snake bite piercing ? Scars? Healing time ?

I want to get either snake bite or my nose pierced (on both sides) but at least two years ago I had a beauty mark (mole, ew) removed from my chest because my doctor thought it was cancerous, turns out she was wron and I ended up having a nice big keloid scar right on my chest. So I don’t know if I’m prone to keloid sccaring or if it just happened on my chest because that’s a very sensitive area.
But if I do get the piercing how long does it take for them to heal. And how long will it take before I can tale them out for at least two hours during school (culinary class) ?
Thanks for the help !

Replacing dairy fat with rapeseed oil causes rapid improvement of hyperlipidaemia: a randomised controlled study.

J Intern Med. 2011 Apr 5;
Iggman D, Gustafsson IB, Berglund L, Vessby B, Marckmann P, Risérus U

Background:  Rapeseed oil (RO), also known as canola oil, principally contains the unsaturated fatty acids 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 and may promote cardiometabolic health. Objective:  To investigate the effects on lipoprotein profile, factors of coagulation and insulin sensitivity of replacing a diet rich in saturated fat from dairy foods (DF-diet) with a diet including RO-based fat (RO-diet). Design:  During a 2 x 3-week randomised, controlled, cross-over trial, 20 free-living hyperlipidaemic subjects were provided with isocaloric test diets that differed in fat composition alone. Blood lipoprotein profile, coagulation and fibrinolytic factors and insulin sensitivity (euglycaemic clamp) were determined before and after the dietary intervention. Results:  All subjects completed the study and compliance was high according to changes in serum fatty acids. The RO-diet, but not the DF-diet, reduced levels of serum cholesterol (-17%), triglycerides (-20%) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-17%), cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (-21%), apolipoprotein (apo) B/apo A-I ratio (-4%) and factor VII coagulant activity (FVIIc) (-5%) from baseline. These changes were significantly different between the diets (p=0.05 to p

Open Question: How to pursue experimenting or even a secret relationship with these guys? Do they like me? We’re all 14-15?

1) Dean - Hes in my new high school and i moved here last year (and im moving in june to my old town so i can go to see my OTHER 2 hot guy friends.. their for another similar question) and met him and we hit it off and became friends. I’m 14, in high school and my friend Dean is too. Hes in my last period history class and i see him in lunch. I’ve a secret crush on him, and i think he likes me too. In history he’ll stare at me when i don’t look, ask me sexy questions in history class (and i get slightly horny lol) and licks his lips at me, etc. So does my friend Dean like me?
One of his questions was if i wanted to top him off… i knew i should’ve said yeah but it was during history and theres a lot of kids in my class… so i just didn’t answer him.
And hes always asking me stuff–even stuff thats not sexual–so it shows he kinda cares about befriending me. And me and dean sometimes just randomly stare at each other in class lmaooooo
Also i’ve had fantasies about him and my friends james, brian, and anthony–i like all of them too–and me.. in a 4 some.
2) Brian –My friends name is brian but i call him yafa. (his last name) anyway we’re both in high school, same age, and in the same gym and culinary classes. we used to always talk to each other in both classes but i haven’t seen him since before SB. (Spring Break) In gym I’d look at him and my other friend Vincent change (i know it sounds creepy but still i do have crushes on them) in the locker room. Sometimes b would look at me and just say a whats up but nothing about me watching him so it was all good. and i called him sexy over facebook in i think october but then everybody found out–even my food science teacher ms feldman but she just told us stop talking about rape. (thats what the convo shifted to)
and he used to date 2 girls one of which is my best friend julia (she wanted me to set her up with him; and she asked me who was the sexiest guy and i said yafa only b/c i didn’t wanna say anyone else and have my bicurious secret come out… and julias rejected me twice and shes been in 3 bad relationships with guys who treat her wrong. and j and b broke up b/c he spread a rumor that she sucked his dicki when she said to me she didn’t.. shes sucked a ton of guys dickis too shes told me…)
Since i know Julia doesn’t like me, and is still single, does B (yafa) like me?
3) My friends name is James and he’s in my music class. We’re both in high school and freshmen, and good friends. In music I’ll sometimes ask him for the answers to some work we’re doing or when he have projects I’ll ask him what hes done on his. One day i caught him staring at me when i wasn’t looking and he called me (I sit in the front of our class on the left side and he sits in the back, diagonal from me) and i’ve been told that when guys or girls stare at you or look at you while you aren’t looking it means they like you.
Problem is I’m a homebody type person and the loner type. I don’t hang out with friends much, only in school. How can i make a move on him? And find out his sexuality? Hes single
4. Vincent — Vincent
Well I have had many thoughts about guys, sometimes sexual, sometimes not. I’m in high school, and i’ve been liking a few of my str8 guy friends though. But one of my questioning guy friends–Vincent–has very gay like or at least bicurious qualities, and he’s single and so am I. and we’re both the same age. (14) To me hes very good looking but to my girl friends he’s not; they talk about him behind his back about all the stuff he says (He said his muscles are so jacked; i think thats kinda cool but anyway; my gfs said hes always sagging and his boxers show when i walk with him on the stairs. I walk behind him on purpose every day so i can get a peek at his sexy a*s) and one of my best gfs Gianna mentioned that he wanted to rape her–and she almost kicked his a*s for it.
He even said to ME (and idk but i think I….. liked it somehow??????? i had a bulge after LOL) “Donald your gonna get raped” but no one was there when he said it; i didn’t tell anyone because of my crush on him.
Also I do masturbate. Sometimes to women, but sometimes to guys too. One of those guy moments happened to be… Vincent. I do have sexual fantasies about me and him but never thinking of him while i’m masturbating… and i was like wtf… but i kept going anyway. (once again because of my crush on him)
So since i describe my urges, I have a plan to experiment with him. My best friend Julia is having her birthday party there and theres gonna be liquor. I’ll get him drunk, get him in a private room or closet, somehow tape the whole thing w/o getting caught, and then thats my first time and i have it on tape :) The party was terrible; i didn’t go. And hes being rude to me, always dissing me…i’ll laugh @ something he says and he&#

Open Question: I need to make a creative Harry Potter-esque dessert?

I recently got accepted into the National Art Honor Society at my school, and the induction ceremony is Harry Potter themed. After the sorting hat ceremony, we need to serve a “Sorcerers Sweet”, “Culinary Concoction”, “Potent Potion”, or “Mystical Magic Drink” as part of our evaluation, and I’m completely lost on what to make.
I’d prefer to make a cake or cupcakes.
Any ideas on what to add to them?

The protective effect of the Mediterranean diet: focus on cancer and cardiovascular risk.

Med Princ Pract. 2011; 20(2): 103-11
Pauwels EK

The lower occurrence of cancer and cardiovascular disease in the population around the Mediterranean basin has been linked to the dietary habits of the region. Indeed, this so-called Mediterranean diet is essentially different from the diets consumed in Western and Northern European countries and is rich in nuts, fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole-wheat bread, fish, and olive oil, with moderate amounts of red wine, which is mainly consumed during meals. Although a variety of cultural and religious traditions exist among the peoples of the Mediterranean area, olive oil, fish, and red wine hold a traditional and central position in the culinary routines of the region. The components of the diet contain an ample source of molecules with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, among which omega-3 fatty acids, oleic acid, and phenolic compounds hold a prominent place. This review will summarize the results of important epidemiological studies that have investigated the protective effect of fish and olive oil on the risk of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer and of wine on the risk of cardiovascular disease. The present review also aims to elucidate the various mechanisms by which various dietary components exhibit their beneficial action. In this respect, emphasis will be placed on the properties of omega-3 fatty acids from fish, oleic acid from olive oil, and phenolic compounds from olive oil and red wine.

Dietary fat intake and the risk of depression: the SUN Project.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
Dietary fat intake and the risk of depression: the SUN Project.

PLoS One. 2011; 6(1): e16268
Sánchez-Villegas A, Verberne L, De Irala J, Ruíz-Canela M, Toledo E, Serra-Majem L, Martínez-González MA

Emerging evidence relates some nutritional factors to depression risk. However, there is a scarcity of longitudinal assessments on this relationship. To evaluate the association between fatty acid intake or the use of culinary fats and depression incidence in a Mediterranean population.Prospective cohort study (1999-2010) of 12,059 Spanish university graduates (mean age: 37.5 years) initially free of depression with permanently open enrolment. At baseline, a 136-item validated food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate the intake of fatty acids (saturated fatty acids (SFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), trans unsaturated fatty acids (TFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and culinary fats (olive oil, seed oils, butter and margarine) During follow-up participants were classified as incident cases of depression if they reported a new clinical diagnosis of depression by a physician and/or initiated the use of antidepressant drugs. Cox regression models were used to calculate Hazard Ratios (HR) of incident depression and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for successive quintiles of fats.During follow-up (median: 6.1 years), 657 new cases of depression were identified. Multivariable-adjusted HR (95% CI) for depression incidence across successive quintiles of TFA intake were: 1 (ref), 1.08 (0.82-1.43), 1.17 (0.88-1.53), 1.28 (0.97-1.68), 1.42 (1.09-1.84) with a significant dose-response relationship (p for trend = 0.003). Results did not substantially change after adjusting for potential lifestyle or dietary confounders, including adherence to a Mediterranean Dietary Pattern. On the other hand, an inverse and significant dose-response relationship was obtained for MUFA (p for trend = 0.05) and PUFA (p for trend = 0.03) intake.A detrimental relationship was found between TFA intake and depression risk, whereas weak inverse associations were found for MUFA, PUFA and olive oil. These findings suggest that cardiovascular disease and depression may share some common nutritional determinants related to subtypes of fat intake.
