For culinary creations, A mortar and pestle can’t be beat
The mortar and pestle is not just another kitchen utensil, it is a tool that has special significance for the one who uses it. Working with it may be strenuous, but the results are often subtle and ineffable. If preparing food is an art, the mortar and pestle is a tool that every cook in every household, every village and every region in Thailand uses to create their art. The way it is used …

Voting Question: Should i go to culinary school or wait until i graduate?

ok so i’m a student in college and i really want to go to pastry school. The thing is that my mom said i had to go to one in georgia so i wouldnt have to pay out of state fees but there isn’t a pastry school that i want to attend to in georgia. I want to go to NY or somewhere like that. So should i wait until i graduate and then go out of state or attend a culinary program that i don’t want to go to next year?

Voting Question: Questions about a old Meat Grinder?

So, i found this old meat grinder, a little back story. My mom used to buy alot of culinary tools while i was a kid, recently i decided to enroll in culinary school and now dusting off all her old stuff.
I found a old meat grinder from Keystone which when i googled it found that it was vintage. And can’t find any info.
So, some of the attachments have very minor rust on them. I washed them very well, and ran them through a sanitation solution.
Do I need to get the rust off? Or does the rust not really matter?

Open Question: Does anyone have any lunch ideas?

Ok, so I’m a commuting college student and the food at my university is cheaply made with no attention to ingredient labels, never fresh, and is always expensive. I want to bring my own lunch, but I have no culinary commonsense or imagination. This are my requirements for the lunch I want to bring:
-It needs to be easy to make and something that I don’t need to wake up too much earlier for to prepare.
-It needs to be compact so that I can fit it in my backpack with my books in some container.
-It needs to be dense in calories and nutrients so that it can hold me from about 1-10pm.
-I need it to be vegan so that I don’t break out or feel sluggish.
-I need to be able to keep it at room temperature–it’s going to be staying in my backpack.
-I won’t have any way of heating this up, so it needs to be something that I can eat at room temperature.
-If it’s really cheap, then that’s a plus.
-If it’s not messy, then that’s a plus.
-I’m open to all types of flavors and cooking styles–I can acquire a taste for almost anything–I just need ideas for “actual food.”
The best answer WILL get their 10 points.

Open Question: Should I keep attending community college and go to a real college or drop out and work full time?

I’m in a real pickle here I’m 21 years old, I live with my parents, I don’t know what to do in my life, got my GED last year, I’m currently in Howard Community College, and I work at Giant as a bagger for $8.50 per hour. I’ve been thinking about three choices working in a kitchen, an office, or keep working at Giant. At first I was thinking of becoming a chef but this one class I’ve been attending was really exhausting. It’s Baking and Pastries the head chef was really impatient, I have to measure the ingredients with a scale, and what’s worst I’m dead tired after four hours in the kitchen. Is that what working in the Culinary Arts is like?. Because if it is I’m quiting. But then again should I quit my bagging job and work in a local restaurant to gain experience or keep working in Giant get promoted to cashier and some other opening? As for the office job which classes should I take? I mean I’m in Algebra I, Baking and Pastries, International Breads, and Principles of the Internet for Fall and Winter and last Spring I took Introduction to Culinary Arts, Garde Mangier I got a B in that one, Culinary Management, and some Art class I forgot what it’s called. What should I do should I flip a coin or sleep on it?
PS sorry for explaining it in long details it’s just that I kept thinking about what to do in my life and I haven’t been sleeping well, but don’t worry I’ll try to get more sleep.
